Every Art Style Zelda Games Have Ever Had

With the announcement of a Link’s Awakening remake for Switch, Nintendo is trying out yet another new art style of The Legend of Zelda series. This is far from the first time it’s done something different, so we decided to take a look back at every unique visual style Zelda has used over the years.

While Nintendo’s other flagship franchise, the Super Mario series, has generally stayed fairly consistent with how its mustachioed plumber looked over the years (at least since it made the jump from 2D to 3D), the Zelda series has always been much more experimental.

You can flip through the slideshow above for loads more images and examples than we were able to fit on this page!

10 Zelda: Ocarina of Time Secrets You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

November 21 marks the 20th anniversary of one of gaming’s most beloved titles, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Ocarina of Time was the first 3D entry in the Zelda franchise, and practically wrote the book on the future of action-adventure games with its breathtaking world, thrilling battles, and complex dungeons. At this point, its successors have blown it away in terms of size and scope, but that doesn’t mean it still isn’t hiding a few secrets that fans missed the first few dozen times through.

Most players are aware of more widespread secrets like the Sinking Lure, Malon’s Bowser brooch, and the Mario Portraits, so we recruited the help of 10-year Ocarina of Time speedrun veteran ZFG to help us construct a list of lesser-known secrets, mechanics, and interactions you can find in Ocarina of Time’s Hyrule.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Hard Mode Has Separate Save

Don’t worry about overwriting your normal save file in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild while tackling the upcoming Hard Mode.

The Nintendo U.K. website says there will be a separate save slot for the mode, which is part of the first DLC pack for the game called The Master Trials. Breath of the Wild’s Hard Mode (named Master Mode overseas) will only offer two save spots, though, compared to six in the normal game.

Breath of the Wild Team Built 2D, NES-like Zelda Prototype

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is built with player freedom and exploration in mind, and to bring this iteration of Hyrule to life, the Nintendo development team looked all the way back to Zelda’s earliest days for inspiration.

Speaking at a GDC 2017 panel, Change and Constant — Breaking Conventions with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi showed that in order to test gameplay ideas and philosophy for the upcoming Zelda game, a 2D prototype was created in the style of the original NES The Legend of Zelda.

Zelda Creator Explains the Importance of Story in Games

Nintendo creative fellow and lauded game designer Shigeru Miyamoto offered his take on the importance of story in games and, more specifically, in the upcoming Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In an interview with Time, Miyamoto offered his thoughts. “Let me start off by saying that Mr.

and his team, instead of creating a game where you’re playing the story, you yourself are embarking on an adventure,” he explained, “and I think they’ve found a unique way to strike a balance between the story and the fact that you’re on an adventure.”

Zelda Rules on Love: A Zelda Wisdom Book

Zelda Rules on Love: A Zelda Wisdom Book

Ask anyone "What defines unconditional love?" and nine out of 10 people will say, "My dog." So who could say it better than Zelda, a 60-pound bulldog? Eminently photographic and wisely wacky, Zelda delivers her advice to the lovelorn with prescriptions for romantic success in this delightful book, "Zelda Rules on Love." This hilarious book features the "adore-a-bull" bulldog in a new collection of photographs, combined with her humorous take on the world of love. Zelda dressed in a red sweater with a red rose in her mouth says, "To be loved . . . be love-a-bull." Zelda in designer attire surrounded by chic shopping bags and credit cards advises, "When love fails, go shopping. . . . You can always return what you don’t want." In a chapter entitled Memor-a-bull Friends and Lovers, Zelda teams up with her best friend, Baby, to portray all the favorites, including Laurel and Hardy, Zelda and Louise, Tonto and the Lone Ranger, Anthony and Cleopatra, and many more. All in all, Zelda knows where it’s at when it comes to love.
